I got my new monitor, finally! So I had this 17″ CRT monitor, which was very good, but in the last year was kind of wrecking - unstable image, narrowed image, scratched surface, and excessive brightness in the last days. It was screaming for retirement. To replace it, I got a LG L1919S-SF.
I wanted a L1952S-SF, slightly better, but there was none available. And I couldn’t stand it, so I got the next better which was in stock. At first it’s kind of strange to work with a TFT screen, they simply look different. But after a few experiments, with games, programs, movies and stuff, I have to say I’m very pleased. The viewport is visibly larger, these 19″ look great, although only capable of 1280×1024 (the resolution I’ve been using for the past 10 years). I can see more and better. Specially after enabling ClearType, the text is crisp and clear. ClearType only works for LCD type displays, so I couldn’t try it until today. Remember to enable it if you’re using Windows XP and if you have a LCD/TFT monitor. Note that M$ has a ClearType Tuner PowerToy to finetune this feature.
I’m very happy to be able to turn the monitor on its side, I spent a couple of minutes trying Strikers 1945 and PacMan in a vertical monitor, and it was a great experience. While it is not designed as “rotable”, I don’t care. It works, and that’s all I want. It has enough refresh (75hz), it’s silver (I wanted black…) and pretty much it meets my basic needs. It’s cool!
Taking advantage that I had to go out, I visited the book fair and got the three books of “The Lords Of Instrumentality” by Cordwainer Smith, including Norstrilia, which is one of the most strange yet attractive books I’ve read. Oh, and many thanks to the precious girl who helped me with the (unneeded) monitor transport.
Well, now, how did I do that thing in PHP?
