As a highly addicted Tetris player since the very first days, I am very selective about Tetris games. I want only the challenging ones, with good and smooth controls. That’s not always the case, and it’s hard to find good Tetris games like Heboris.
Heboris is a Tetris clone quite old, from 2001. Programmed by Kenji “Hosiken” Hosimoto in a scripting language, it shows the behaviour of the then last iteration of the Tetris The Grand Master games by Arika, Tetris The Absolute (a.k.a TGM2). I have never played TGM2, but TGM is awesome albeit simple. Smooth controls and 20g gravity playing.
Although Heboris hasn’t been updated in a long time, other people have created what’s called Heboris Unofficial Expansion (a.k.a. UE), Which once installed over a simple Heboris, transforms it into a better-than-great all-purpose Tetris game with lots of game modes. Different rotation systems, dozens of gradings, different game targets… A Tetris addict’s paradise.
At TetrisConcept.com’s wiki there are two articles related to Heboris and Heboris Unofficial Expansion. The UE article lists all the game modes and features of UE.
Getting the game itself, which is freeware, means going to a page in japanese. Head to Heboris home page. Below the title which says “Heboris 2001″, there are a few links. Hover over the one which links to the download page “download.html”, which is the second link (third word). In that page you’ll find the last version, Heboris 1.60a. There are two choices, an EXE installer (recommended) with several mirrors, and a zip file with only one mirror.
Getting UE is tricky too. Go to the Heboris Unofficial Expansion download page. There you’ll find the last ten released files. I see it’s updated daily. There are two versions of UE: EX and Lite. EX is full featured, while Lite is aimed to less powerful systems. I recommend getting any package which says “EX YSG2k full package”, for example I got “C7V3.55EX YGS2K Full Package” which was about 10mb.
First install Heboris, then install over it the uncompressed UE package, and you’re ready to go. Happy Tetris!
