Today is the 37th anniversary of the death of Jimi Hendrix, who passed away at the age of 27 during the early hours of September 18, 1970.
The causes and facts of his death remain a mystery; it’s still uncertain how he died, if he was already dead when the paramedics arrived, or if it was suicide or an accident. Reports and declarations were contradictory. But what most people agree is that Hendrix is one of the most influential figures in modern music, including many subgenres of rock, and specially in the psychedelic rock movement.
He was also an accomplished guitarist, known for his skills, wild style, new sounds, and lack of fear when experimenting. In his short career of slightly more than four years, he created hundreds of songs, although he only published five albums during his life. His live performances, including the legendary Woodstock concert, show some of the finest live acts of modern music history.
He was the leader of four different groups, used drugs to push his creativity, was involved in many legal troubles, and settled the grounds for a musical legend. Many of his songs are classics: Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Voodoo Child, All Along The Watchtower… A great catalog of fine rock with jazz and blues influences to play on this day. Long live Jimi.
