So what’s the story about the domain EligeOtraVez.net? Well, I actually wanted PiInTheSky.net or PiInTheSky.org, but those were registered already. The other options weren’t of my taste (I don’t like all those .biz, .info and .crap TLDs). I didn’t like the spanish translation, PiEnElCielo.net, just because I am really too used to the english version.
When I decided I was really going to acquire my own domain, and when I realized that my first choices weren’t available, I was reading the excellent science-fiction saga The Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons. There’s a quote from the last book, The Rise of Endymion, which is simply choose again. It’s one of my favorite quotes ever, although you would have to read the books to really understand it. The spanish version of that sentence is elige otra vez. So that’s how I chose my domain.
I know that, in the spanish translations of the book, it actually says elige de nuevo, but from the first time I read the book (many years ago), I always thought that a better translation (with literally the same meaning) was elige otra vez, and that’s how those three words got carved in my mind. When I went to reserve my domain, I didn’t have any doubt that elige otra vez was the sentence I wanted.
I briefly considered getting EsInvisible.net, following another great quote from my favourite book The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The quote is very famous, and it goes like what is essential is invisible to the eye, or in spanish lo esencial es invisible a los ojos. So if I got the domain EsInvisible.net, (IsInvisible.net in english), I could make some wordplay with subdomains and email addresses. Thus, the blog would be at loesencial.esinvisible.net (in english: what is essential is invisible), and there would be addresses like pi@esinvisible.net (in english it would sound like Pi is invisible. But making silly wordplays with another of my favourite quotes wasn’t exactly what I had in mind. Thus, I went for EligeOtraVez.net.
Incidentally, after reserving the domain EligeOtraVez.net, I found out that there is a constant wordplay, since choose again is an imperative in english, but in spanish is both an imperative and an affirmation. So, pi.eligeotravez.net means both Pi, choose again, and Pi chooses again. Yes, very silly, but at least it’s not obviously silly as EsInvisible.net would have been.
Sure that you might be thinking that there’s some incoherence between the domain name and the site name. Yes and no. Pi in the Sky is not the only part of EligeOtraVez.net, and I wouldn’t even call it the core of the site. Pi in the Sky is just the front door, the face of the site. Although I didn’t have really specific plans regarding the contents of the domain when I decided it was time to have one (besides this kind of odd blog), I knew that Pi in the Sky wouldn’t be the only part.
You can get to the main, principal, important, exclusive and broad index of what’s in EligeOtraVez.net at Meta.EligeOtraVez.net, a link which is also available on every page of Pi in the Sky, in the top list of links. Note that “meta” in english can mean abstraction of something, or in a programming environment, information about information. But in spanish, it also means goal, finish line. Which in this case is also the start.

You might not choose again, but choose well. Today it’s a nice and sunny day to call your friend(s). You might send them an email at least. Try it!
