A Scanner Darkly
Animation, Science-Fiction, Drama, Thriller. USA, 2006
Director: Richard Linklater
Writers: Philip K. Dick (original novel), Richard Linklater (screenplay)
Cast: Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson
A very interesting mixture of drama and thriller, based in Dick’s own experience with drugs, but situated in a near future. An undercover cop deals with the addiction provoked by the drug he fights against. It features an awesome and unique visual style because the movie has been rotoscoped entirely. (more…)

Just a quick note about Eight Below, a movie produced by Disney in 2006. While I don’t think the movie is that great or relevant to warrant a full review, I thought I should mention it. It has wonderful snow scenery, and a beautiful animal story with eight dogs. I think the movie could have been better with less human scenes and more dog action. If you like huskies and malamuts in Antartica, then this movie is for you.

The Beach
Drama. USA / UK, 2000
Director: Danny Boyle
Writers: Alex Garland (novel), John Hodge (screenplay)
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tilda Swinton, Virginie Ledoyen
A good movie if you can read between lines and see the spot-on analogy with the current society. Intense, interesting, paranoid, still with many flaws, but a good choice for many reasons. (more…)

The Lord Of The Rings

Director: Ralph Bakshi

Failed attempt to translate Tolkien’s monumental work into a series of movies, and certainly disappointing from multiple views. (more…)

Science-fiction. Japan, 2004
Director: Kazuaki Kiriya
Writers: Kazuaki Kiriya (screenplay), Dai Sato, and more.
Cast: Yusuke Iseya, Kumiko Aso, Akira Terao, Hiroyuki Miyasako
Stunning visuals, absolutely classic anime-style with live-action actors, epic soundtrack, awesome dialogues, and beautiful moments. Casshern is a fine example that original means “old stuff presented in a new way”, without forgetting quality. (more…)

Originally written around 2005.
Or almost… Ten movies or sagas (actually they are 17 movies), which I’ve personally watched, and I think they are essential to understand SciFi cinema. I’d like to clarify a couple of things regarding this selection; because it’s just that, a personal selection. (more…)
